PROVO, UT (ABC 4 News) A desk job at a Provo at MultiLing in Provo is more active than it may sound. Employees do Yoga at their desks and even lift weights in the cubicles. The company just received an award for supporting wellness in the workplace.

Esther Morris works for the translation company, which works for corporations around the world. It’s a sedentary job, or at least it used to be before the wellness program was implemented. “It has changed my life in that I feel healthy, I feel great, and I’m a lot happier.”

She says she was worried about what sitting in front of a computer eight hours a day would do to her health. “When you are doing the same thing over and over again for the better part of your day you need an outlet.”

For MultiLing employees that outlet can be found inside and out of the workplace. Human Resource Manager, Ann Robertson, says “we are striving for a work life balance. We ask people to sit in a cubicle for eight and nine hours a day, so we encourage them when they are not here to get out and get moving.” But employees are also given time during the workday to take a walk, do tai chi, at desk yoga sessions, and even weight lifting. Robertson says “with what we do, it takes a lot of concentration and if you have kind of gotten your energy out and exercised you are able to better concentrate and do what we do a lot better.”

She says almost 100-percent of employees are participating in the wellness program, which also offers monthly workshops on nutrition and exercises that range from biking to water aerobics. “People are enjoying a healthy lifestyle and it’s coming up in discussions around the office. They are eating better, they are exercising, and they are doing it together quite often.”

Last year the whole company took a hike up Y Mountain. It was one of several they did as a group. Employees say it has built friendships and better moral in the workplace. For some it has forever changed their lives. Esther Morris says she took up running as part of the corporate program. She has now completed three marathons and two half marathons. She says running has become permanently ingrained in her lifestyle.

The wellness program has also improved the MultiLing’s bottom line. Since it was introduced there has been higher productivity, lower absenteeism, and less insurance costs.
